Newton Police Department

• Travis W. Howerton, 34, of Des Moines, was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and disorderly conduct at 5:59 p.m. Thursday in Newton. According to Newton police, officers were sent to Skiff Medical Center on a call of a person throwing and kicking things in the emergency room, causing $350 in property damage. Upon arrival, officers were told Howerton left, walking southbound. Officers caught up to him in an alley while Howerton allegedly shouted “take me to jail” before smashing his head on a wall. Howerton was arrested and transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Jason T. Purtilo, 35, of Newton, was charged with trespassing at 2:16 a.m. Sunday. According to Newton police, officers were sent to Yesway on First Avenue East on a call of a criminal trespass. Purtilo had already been arrested for trespassing at that location. Officers located Purtilo, arrested him and transported him to the Jasper County Jail.
