Ten Tigerhawks earn Class 1A all-district honors

Colfax-Mingo’s football team equaled last season’s win total when it opened district play with a road victory over Pleasantville in late September.

The Tigerhawks then matched the number with another victory, this time at home, over Woodward Academy three weeks later.

Colfax-Mingo ended up 5-4 overall and 2-3 in Class 1A District 7 play, and 10 Tigerhawks earned spots on the all-district team.

Seniors Zarek Hill and Ahren Teed and juniors Brady Berkey, Trinity Schroeder and Andres Villegas all earned first-team recognition, while senior Skyler Aikin and junior Trystin Ross were second-team selections and seniors Holister Koenig and Damir Gumerov and junior Andrew Meinhart all were honorable mention choices.

Colfax-Mingo also had five who earned academic all-district honors. Those five who had a 3.5 grade point average or higher were Schroeder, sophomore Andrew Gorman, Alistair Gibson, sophomore Zach Steenhoek and senior manager Kelcie Steenhoek.

Berkey was a first-team pick as the district’s top quarterback. In district play, Berkey threw for a league-high 1,042 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions. He had a passer rating of 127.6 and rushed for a pair of TDs.

Overall, Berkey threw for 1,854 yards, 20 TDs and seven picks. His quarterback rating was 138.7 and he had three rushing touchdowns.

Schroeder was one of Berkey’s top targets, and he earned first-team honors as a wide receiver. In district games, he finished with 25 catches for 470 yards and five TDs. He averaged 18.8 yards per catch.

Overall, Schroeder had 37 catches, 730 yards and seven TDs. He averaged 19.7 yards per catch.

Hill has been one of Colfax-Mingo’s best players the past two seasons. He had a stellar season as a wideout but earned first-team honors as a defensive back. In district play, Hill had 28 tackles, three interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Overall, Hill finished with 46 1/2 tackles, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, one tackle for loss and one sack.

Villegas had a breakout season as a Tigerhawk linemen. He earned first-team honors as a defensive linemen. In district play, Villegas finished with 21 tackles and three tackles for loss.

Overall, he had 42 tackles, eight tackles for loss and two sacks.

The final first-team selection was Teed. He was picked as an offensive lineman and Aikin was a second-team offensive lineman.

The duo helped the Tigerhawks gain 1,435 total yards in district play.

C-M rushed for 382 yards and passed for 1,053 yards and scored 14 touchdowns.

Overall, the Colfax-Mingo offense had 1,886 passing yards, 981 rushing yards and 2,867 total yards. They scored 29 TDs.

Ross was the team’s other second-team selection, and he was picked as a linebacker. He had 27 1/2 tackles and one tackle for loss in district games.

Overall, Ross finished with 49 1/2 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack and one fumble recovery.

Koenig was an honorable mention selection as a linebacker. In district play, he had 21 tackles and five tackles for loss.

Overall, he finished with 38 1/2 tackles, eight tackles for loss and one sack.

Gumerov was an honorable mention choice as a running back. He tallied 306 rushing yards and two TDs in district games. He also had seven catches for 50 yards and averaged five yards per carry.

Overall, Gumerov tallied 508 rushing yards, three TDs, eight catches for 62 yards and a 5.3 yards per carry average.

Meinhart was an honorable mention selection as a defensive back. Meinhart had 22 tackles, one tackle for loss and one interception in district play. Overall, he had 40 tackles, one tackle for loss and two interceptions.
