Youth Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Entries accepted through Monday — Decorate a pumpkin as your favorite book character. Pumpkins may be painted, dressed, and accessorized, but not carved. Entries will be accepted Oct. 18-22 and the public will vote for their favorite entries to select winners. Voting takes place Oct. 23-30. Entry forms may be picked up at the Children’s Desk in the library. Winners will be announced on Oct. 31 and will win a gift basket of children’s books, DVDs and other Halloween treats. Entries will be accepted for two categories; Individual Child and Family/Group. The family category is for pumpkins done by an entire family, daycare center, or class with an adult helping children. Escape from Frankenstein's
Laboratory

7:30 p.m. Oct. 23-25 — Grab your friends and put your problem-solving skills to the test in our spooky Halloween escape room. Work together to steal Dr. Frankenstein’s secret formula for creating life and escape the laboratory before time runs out. This escape room is part scavenger hunt, part puzzle game, and a howling good time. Recommended group size is 4 to 6 players. Call 641-792-4108 to reserve a time slot for your group. Ages 16 and older.

Trick-or-Treat at the Library

5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 30 — All little ghosts and goblins are invited to stop by the library meeting room to trick or treat during Newton Beggar’s Night. The room will be decorated with a Candyland theme, and children will receive candy and a book (new or gently used) to keep. Trick or treating will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. Children of all ages and their families welcome.

The Underground Railroad in Iowa

6 p.m. Nov. 15 — Storyteller, Darrin Crow shares the fascinating story of the small town of Salem, Iowa, and the heroic citizens who helped hundreds of enslaved people find their way to freedom. This program is free and open to the public. All ages welcome. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Newton Public Library.

Yoga at the Library

6 p.m. Nov. 19 — Certified yoga instructor, Meghan Davis, leads an introductory yoga class for adults. No experience necessary. Attendees are encouraged to bring a yoga mat or towel, if they wish. This class is sponsored by the Newton YMCA. Call 641-792-4108 to register.
