Colfax-Mingo football sets records, gets back on track against Knights

COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo assistant football coach Matt Barkalow keeps track of all the school records obtained by the Tigerhawk football program.

For the past decade, Barkalow, the team’s offensive coordinator, has seen some fantastic individual performances on the gridiron.

After Colfax-Mingo’s effort on Oct. 12, Barkalow is going to be busy updating the record books.

Senior quarterback Brady Berkey threw for a school-record 516 yards and seven touchdowns, junior Trinity Schroeder set new single-game school records in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns and the Tigerhawks won a shootout, 68-50, over Woodward Academy.

The Class 1A District 7 win keeps the Tigerhawks’ playoff hopes alive.

“It was huge for us to get the momentum of a win,” Colfax-Mingo head coach Jeff Lietz said. “This was a good one to get our mojo back. We had a nice crowd on a nice night, and it was good to get one. It was a great team win.”

The 68 points scored for the Tigerhawks is a new program record.

Berkey set new school records for pass attempts (46) and pass completions (29) and his seven TD passes ties former Tigerhawk Jared Myers for the most in a single game in school history.

Schroeder re-wrote several school records with his performance. He finished with 12 receptions for 244 yards and four touchdowns, which are all single-game records at Colfax-Mingo.

Colfax-Mingo (5-3 overall, 2-2 in district play) also got 157 receiving yards and two TDs from senior Zarek Hill, and senior fullback Damir Gumerov rushed for 151 yards and two scores on 17 carries.

“I don’t think I have ever seen that many points in a game,” Schroeder said. “It feels good to get back on the winning track. It’s good for the team.”

Colfax-Mingo’s four main receiving options all scored at least one TD on the night. Senior Holister Koenig finished with 72 receiving yards and one TD on three catches and junior Trystin Ross added 33 yards on four receptions and scored on a rushing TD in the second half.

Hill now has 21 career touchdown catches, which is tied with Blake Summy for the most in school history. Hill also is second to Summy in career receiving yards at the school.

Hill has 11 TD catches this season, which is one shy of Summy’s single-season school record.

The Tigerhawks scored 10 touchdowns in their 18 possessions on the night. They turned it over three times. Of the 10 drives that ended in touchdowns, Colfax-Mingo never needed more than six plays and five of them took three plays of less.

The Knights scored eight TDs in 20 possessions but gave it away five times. Woodward Academy’s shortest TD was 15 yards. No other TD was less than 38 yards, and the Knights went 60 or more yards on five of their eight TDs.

Berkey, Schroeder, Hill and junior Andrew Meinhart all had interceptions for the Tigerhawk defense. It was the 11th career pick for Hill, which is a school record.

Koenig had a team-high seven tackles and a sack, while Hill tallied 6 1/2 tackles and Schroeder added 5 1/2 tackles. Sophomore Brode Nichol recovered a fumble.

The Tigerhawks host Woodward-Granger in the regular season finale at 7 p.m. on Friday in Colfax. The game is for third place in the district. A win gives both teams a shot at a wild card berth into the postseason.
