Newton woman injured in fatal car crash

MARSHALL COUNTY — A Newton woman was released from the hospital Friday after sustaining injuries in a two-vehicle collision near Rhoads Thursday morning that left another woman dead.

According to an Iowa Highway Patrol crash report issued Thursday afternoon, Klarissa N. Penniston, a 25-year-old Newton resident, suffered injuries and was transported to UnityPoint Health in Des Moines.

According to Penniston’s mother, Kristine Martin, Penniston only suffered minor injuries and has been released from the hospital.

Amanda Lynne Wilken, a 23-year-old West Des Moines resident, was fatally injured in the crash.

Iowa State Patrol responded to the accident at 9:03 a.m. at the intersection of Durham Avenue and 295th Street, east of Rhodes. After investigating, it was determined that Wilken, driving a 2014 Jeep Cherokee, was driving northbound on Durham Avenue when she allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign at 295th Street and was struck broadside by Penniston, driving a 2015 Dodge Journey eastbound on 295th Street.
