Newton Police Department

• Jeremy R. Nuss, 43, of Marshalltown, was charged with fifth-degree theft at 12:19 p.m. Thursday. According to Newton police, officers were sent to Hy-Vee after an employee saw Nuss allegedly trying to leave the store without paying for and concealing shoelaces and a pack of wipes, totaling $6.40. After officers interviewed all people involved, they gave Nuss a citation. He was released to appear in court.

• Christian J. Schultz-Carrillo, 24, of Des Moines, was charged with public intoxication at 11:11 p.m. Friday. Officers were sent to McDonald’s, 726 First Ave. E. on a call of a man sleeping in a booth for hours. When police arrived, officers attempted to wake him and noticed a strong odor of alcohol. He also had red, bloodshot and watery eyes when he eventually woke up. After failing sobriety tests, Schultz-Carrillo started yelling and threatening. Schultz-Carrillo was arrested and transported to Jasper County Jail.

• Lindsay Lewis, 30, of Chariton, was cited for following too close to a vehicle in front of her at 5:20 p.m. Friday. According to Newton police, officers were sent to an area about 100 yards south of the intersection of Highway 14 and South 12th Avenue West on a call of a motor vehicle accident. When officers arrived, they made contact with Lewis, who appeared visibly upset and told them the rain made it hard to see the vehicles in front of her Dodge Grand Caravan. She also told officers she and her three children are fine. Morgan Daniels, 26, of Altoona, drove the Toyota Rav4, and said she had some pain in her right leg. Barney’s Wrecker and Auto Repair assisted at the scene.
