Public servants should serve the public

I’m old-fashioned. I expect people who choose to go into public service to actually serve the public especially those who most need an extra hand. Large, wealthy corporations do not need extra help; neither, most of the time, do wealthy people.

In my time, I have voted for Independents, Republicans, and Democrats-the best person, in my opinion, for the job.

We are fortunate in Jasper County in that we have just such an individual — Wes Breckenridge, current Iowa House Representative in District 29.

From his long career in public service law enforcement officer in Newton and Jasper County for more than 25 years, an educator at DMACC, and now a member of the Iowa House of Representatives, Wes has shown an unswerving devotion to actually serving the public including those who espouse other viewpoints. He listens and acts; his votes in the Iowa House are no surprise (unlike some who like to say one thing and then vote another way); they come from deep personal conviction and listening to his constituents. He works is guided by common sense-not partisan sense.

He believes in compromise-it’s not a dirty word. Compromise is how democracy works. Even in these extreme partisan times, he has consistently reached across the aisle and sought out all viewpoints and has been remarkably productive as a member of the current minority party. See his work with the mental health bill (HF #456) and the Ground Emergency Medical Transport bill (HF #2285), where he worked with the majority party and also local officials and constituents to bring about needed change.

Especially in these times, we need to have such a capable and caring individual working on our behalf in the Iowa Legislature. I will vote to re-elect Wes Breckenridge in Iowa House District 29.
