• Jesus Angel Gaytan Ruiz, 26, of Des Moines, was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence at 1:51 a.m. Sept. 23. According to Newton Police, officers received a call referencing a gold Pontiac sedan swerving across the road while heading eastbound on Interstate 80, near mile marker 156. An officer turned its lights on to signal the driver to pull over, made contact with Gaytan Ruiz and noticed he had watery and bloodshot eyes while giving off an odor of alcohol. When asked, Gaytan Ruiz allegedly told the officer he drank six beers. He failed sobriety tests and was arrested and transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Lori J. Edwards, 43, of Newton, was charged with domestic assault at 7:29 p.m. Thursday. According to Newton Police, officers were sent to the 600 block of West Fifth Street South on a call of domestic assault. The victim spoke with officers and said Edwards was angry when she came home, and the victim went into the garage as a result. He walked back into the house to see Edwards flailing around, and the victim had to hold Edwards down to stop her hitting. That’s when Edwards allegedly bit the victim, causing cuts and bleeding from his finger. Edwards told officers she was being choked by the victim, and that’s why she bit him. Edwards was arrested and transported to the Jasper County Jail.

• Kenneth E. Chance II, 19, of Newton, was charged with forgery at 3:15 p.m. Sept. 25. According to Newton Police, officers were sent to Goodwill, 1118 First Ave. E., on a call of counterfeit money. When officers arrived, Goodwill staff told officers Chance tried to pass off a $100 bill to pay for $15.96 worth of items. When asked by officers, Chance denied knowing the bill was counterfeit, and claimed he received the bill from Walmart. He was arrested and transported to the Jasper County Jail. Chance was also arrested and transported to the Jasper County Jail three days later, when officers searched a residence in the 500 block of North 15th Avenue East for the forgery charge and found a glass pipe with methamphetamine residue on it inside his coat pocket. Chance was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
