• Remington S. Clark, 27, of Newton, Katelund E. Jeffrey, 22, of Prairie City, and Christopher J. Pollard, 28, of Newton, were all charged with fifth-degree theft at 7:33 p.m. Sept. 15. According to Newton police, officers were sent to Walmart on Iowa Speedway Drive on a call of a reported theft. When officers arrived, they talked to Walmart employees and watched surveillance video and determined Clark, Jeffrey and Pollard allegedly tried to leave the store with $94 in unpaid items. Clark, Jeffrey and Pollard received a citation and were released.

• Paul L. Harris, 30, of Newton, was charged with assault causing bodily injury or mental illness at 1:08 a.m. Tuesday. Officers were sent to Yesway, 405 First Ave. E., on a call of a fight in progress. When officers arrived, they talked to witnesses and learned Harris, after talking to him about his child’s mother, allegedly punched the victim in the left eye causing redness and swelling. The suspected the aggressor of the fight, Harris, was walking west on First Avenue. Officers caught up to him, placed him under arrest and transported him to the Jasper County Jail.
