David Norman “Dave” Young, 91, son of Clarence and Florence (Smith) Young, was born Jan. 19, 1927, in Newton. He was united in marriage with Loretta Alicia McGivern Dec. 2, 195,0 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo. The couple lived on their farm near Altoona, for 52 years.

Dave was a member of Saints John & Paul Catholic Church in Altoona. He was a man of deep Christian faith, who always put the love of God and family first. Dave enlisted in the U.S. Navy after high school and served for two years at the end of World War II. Dave and Alicia met at the University of Iowa and were married for 62 years until the passing of Alicia in 2013. Dave was an electrical lineman for Iowa Power and Light and did electrical construction and was a member of the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) for 69 years. He raised cattle and grew crops on their farm outside Altoona.

Dave loved outdoor adventure and traveling. He was an amateur astronomer with a large telescope in his backyard for viewing the stars, moon and planets. Dave loved to read and spent Sunday afternoons playing with and showing his eight children the joy of ice skating, fishing, yard football, softball, golf and tennis, which they enjoy to this day.

Dave, a longtime resident of the Altoona area, passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 17, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ronnie Young; and sister, Laura Jones.

Those lovingly honoring Dave’s memory include four daughters, Elizabeth (Liz) (Robert) Fitzgerald of St. Louis, Mo., Rebecca (Larry) Sterbick of Red Oak, Maureen Zirbel of Dallas, Texas, Laura (Leo) Brazeau of Tampa, Fla.; four sons, David Young Jr. of Durango, Co., Thomas Young, John (Chris) Young of Cold Spring, Minn., and Mark Young of West Pueblo, Co.; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A time of memory, sharing and visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21 at the Saint John & Paul Catholic Church, 1401 First Ave. S. in Altoona. A funeral mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. at Saint John & Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Altoona Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
