PCFD revving up for annual car show

For small town volunteer fire departments, staying up to date with equipment can often carry a hefty price tag. The equipment, used while the volunteers work to battle area fires that threaten properties through the community and beyond, is of vital importance to the department.

To help fund equipment purchases and associated costs, the Prairie City Fire Department is hosting its Annual Car Show starting at 9 a.m. Sunday downtown on the Prairie City square.

“They bought a new air tank system in the past,” organizer Jared Hougham said.

The car show, in its eighth year, brings hundreds of vehicles to downtown Prairie City, from classic Corvettes to custom builds. Held rain or shine, the event is a prime opportunity for the community to show off its growing downtown and help a good cause.

Registration opens at 9 a.m. and runs until noon. Dash plaques, an aluminum sign unique to the PCFD show, will be assigned to the first 100 entrants.

Valve cover races will have a sign in at noon with races started at 12:30 p.m. Both junior and senior divisions will take place with awards given for best design senior eliminator and junior eliminator and a rookie class best design.

Awards, which start at 2:30 p.m., will be given for the top 30 over all, along with the Mayor’s Choice, Fire Chief’s Choice, Furthest Traveled and Family Build Done and Not Done. Special awards will also be given from the Iowa Street Rod Association and Good Guys.

Along with the cars, enthusiasts can win door prizes, take part in a 50/50 raffle, enjoy music from a DJ and grab some food served by the local bars and restaurants. T-shirts will also be for sale at the event.

Registration at the show is $20.
