No. 2 Mustangs hammer Pella Christian

PELLA — The Class 2A No. 2 PCM football team moved to 4-0 on the season with another dominating effort on the gridiron.

The Mustangs rushed for 326 yards and out-gained 1A No. 8 Pella Christian 505-106 during a 40-0 road win on Sept. 14.

PCM senior Wes Cummings rushed for a season-high 206 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Mustang offense.

The first-team defense pitched its first shutout of the season and has only allowed 16 total points in 14 quarters.

PCM led 7-0 at halftime but scored 20 in the third and 13 in the fourth to rout the Eagles. It’s PCM’s first win over Pella Christian (2-2) in seven tries. The last victory came in 2011.

The Mustangs had a 25-8 advantage in first downs and did not punt in the game.

Cummings made it 7-0 in the second quarter with a 15-yard TD run. He scored his two other TDs in the third quarter.

After senior quarterback Reed Worth made it 14-0 with a 1-yard run in the third, Cummings made it 27-0 with touchdown runs of 28 and 21 yards.

Worth added a 42-yard TD run in the fourth, then connected on a 16-yard TD pass to senior Isaac Telfer to cap the scoring.

Cummings had 25 receiving yards on three catches to his add to rushing total.

The senior moves to within 400 yards of the school’s all-time rushing record. He now has 2,876 rushing yards in his career.

Worth finished with 88 rushing yards and two scores on 12 carries and was 13-of-21 for 183 yards and another TD through the air.

Senior Jarron Trausch had 32 rushing yards on 10 carries and added 34 receiving yards on four catches. Senior Brayton Van Dyke had three catches for 74 yards to lead the receivers and Telfer had 32 yards and a TD on two catches. Senior Preston Van Wyk had one catch for 18 yards.

Senior Cole Dustin led the Mustang defense with six tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery.

Van Dyke had 4 1/2 tackles and a sack, senior Nick Buswell tallied five tackles, Trausch added a sack and a fumble recovery and senior Nick Dredge snatched an interception.

The Mustangs are scheduled to play in their first home game of the season when they host Chariton at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 21 in Monroe for homecoming.
