C-M football moves to 3-0 after win over Wayne

CORYDON — The Colfax-Mingo defense stopped Wayne inside the red zone on the final play of the game and improved 3-0 on the season after a 27-22 road win over the Falcons on a wet and muddy night on Sept. 7.

Wayne had the ball inside the Tigerhawks’ 10-yard line but couldn’t score as time expired. The Tigerhawks are 3-0 for the first time since 2014.

Colfax-Mingo junior quarterback Brady Berkey threw three touchdown passes to senior Zarek Hill.

For Hill, that’s a Class 1A-high eight TDs on the season. Berkey has thrown a 1A-best 11 TD passes and no interceptions.

The Tigerhawks also got a TD from senior fullback Damir Gumerov, who finished with 55 yards on eight carries.

Senior Holister Koenig rushed for a career-high 131 yards on 10 carries. The Tigerhawks rushed for 182 yards in the win.

Berkey was 10-of-18 through the air for 107 yards. Hill got 89 of those yards on six catches. His longest TD reception was 52 yards.

The Tigerhawks overcame a strong rushing attack by Wayne (1-2). Chase Keifer rushed for 279 yards on 40 carries in the loss. Keifer now has a Class A-high 716 rushing yards this season.

The Falcons did not complete a pass on the night.

Junior Trystin Ross led Colfax-Mingo on defense with 10 1/2 tackles and a fumble recovery. Senior Ahren Teed added 9 1/2 tackles, Koenig had 6 1/2 tackles and junior Andres Villegas collected six tackles.

Gumerov finished with 5 1/2 tackles, two sacks and two tackles for loss.

The Tigerhawks return to action against Lynnville-Sully (1-2) at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14 in Sully.
