Streets in Smila, Ukraine get much-needed attention

At a time when The Des Moines Register reports that Iowa’s infrastructure makes financial news company 24/7 Wall St.’s “worst” list, it seems that Smila, Ukraine’s much-maligned city streets, highlighted in my June 18 special correspondence to the Newton Daily News, are getting some attention.

A post on Facebook by Smila Svit (Smila Light) July 10 shows Mayor Olexey Cibko superintending the paving of three streets, one of which was to be Soborna, where the old Lyceum school which O.P.E.N., our sister city organization, has long supported, was located.

One of my colleagues at GoCamp, Elena Rogovec, posted a video on social media July 29 which shows the streets being blacktopped.  She remarked that the videographer, Tetyana Ocheretyana, is really surprised:  “She says, ‘Wow!  Smila!  It’s too nice’.”

Progress!
