Five Newton men play on Capital City Command semi-pro football team

When the Capital City Command take the football field on Saturday there will be five Newton residents in uniform. The Command is a semi-professional football team in Des Moines and a member of the Midwest Football League.

Tony Lewis, Mark Mackrman, Skyler Wedeking, Gordon Head and Zac Powell live in Newton and play for the Command. The Command plays at 7 p.m. Saturday against the Omaha Outlaws out of Omaha, Neb., in the MFL playoffs at the Des Moines North High School football field.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

“I’d like to see more fans in the stands on Saturday,” Lewis said. “I want to have people come out and see what the team is all about. If we win, we will play for the league championship.”

Lewis is a 1998 Newton High graduate who played for the Cardinals in the 1997 football season. He said he was a coach for the first two years of the Command’s history as a team and is in his second season playing linebacker.

Wedeking is listed as a tight end and linebacker for the Command. Mackerman, Head and Powell are listed as offensive linemen.

The Command is 10-2 and won the MFL Northwest Division this season. The MFL championship game is Aug. 18 in Omaha. There are 16 teams in the MFL from Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas.
