• Tommy D. Sanders, 53, of Newton, was arrested and charged with second-degree attempted burglary Monday, after he allegedly entered a garage and basement doorway of a home in the 500 block of Third Avenue East. According to an NPD report, officers were dispatched to the home around 2:10 a.m. where the victims told investigators they sat in their vehicle in the driveway while the intruder, later identified as Sanders, walked right past their car and into the garage, rummaging through items. When Sanders noticed the victims, he hid behind a car in the garage then walked toward the basement door. One of the victims yelled at Sanders then he fled the scene on foot. Police found Sanders in the 700 block of North Fourth Avenue East. After his arrest, police found Sanders with needles used to inject drugs. Officers also found marijuana hidden in Sanders’ mouth when they arrived at the Jasper County Jail. He was also charged with possession of contraband (marijuana) in a correctional institution and possession of drug paraphernalia.
