Stargaze at the Library

8 p.m. Monday — Join us after-hours as the Des Moines Astronomical Society leads a night sky viewing. Learn how to spot constellations and planets while viewing the night sky through a high powered telescope.

This program will begin with a presentation inside the library meeting room and move to the library lawn after dusk. Children are welcome to attend with an adult.

Library Overdue Notices
Moving to Email

As of Aug. 1, the Newton Public Library will be sending overdue notices by email only. In order to receive overdue notices, users will need to add an email address to their library account. To add an email address to your account, log-in to your account from the library catalog (http://newtongov.org/90/Library, then click on Catalog). Click on Send a Request at the top of the page, then choose Request to Add/Change Email Address from the drop down menu. Type in your email address and click Submit. Printed receipts with material due dates are also provided when you check out materials at the library.

Teen Ombre Succulent Pots

6 p.m. July 24 — Paint an ombre clay pot and plant a succulent. Attendees with receive a succulent to plant and learn about how to care for them. Call the library at 641-792-4108 to register. Ages 13-18.

Family Movie at the Library

1 p.m. July 27 — Join us for Friday afternoon family movies during the summer. Movies begin at 1 p.m. and last between 90-115 minutes. Bring your own popcorn, lemonade is provided. Seating is on the floor, bring a pillow if you like. No registration required.

Iowa Youth Chorus Camp

5 to 7:30 p.m. July 30 to Aug. 2 — Iowa Youth Chorus is offering a children’s choral camp at the Newton Public Library. Instruction will be provided by Jane Johnson, director of the Newton Children’s Choir, for Iowa Youth Chorus. Supper will be provided. A short public performance will be held at the conclusion of the camp at 7 p.m. Aug. 2nd. The camp is for children ages 7 to 11 and registration is required to attend. Call 641-792-4108 to register.

Maytag Pool Party

6:30 to 9 p.m. Aug. 3 — Children who participated in the library’s Summer Reading program are reminded to turn in their Summer Reading logs no later than August 2nd to receive their ticket to our Maytag pool party. Pizza will be provided by Pizza Ranch and served at 6:30 pm, while supplies last. Swimming begins at 7 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. Parents may enter with their child’s ticket. Ticket is required to attend.

Adult Summer Reading Logs Due

Aug. 4 — Turn in your completed adult Summer Reading BINGO sheet by Aug. 4 to be eligible for the grand prize Kindle drawing. Winners will be announced on Aug. 6.

Yoga at the library

6 p.m. Aug. 13 — Certified yoga instructor Meghan Davis, leads an introductory class for adults. No experience necessary. Attendees may bring a yoga mat or towel, if they like. This program is first come, first served and spaces are limited. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. This class is sponsored by the Newton YMCA.
