Luella C. Sherrard

Luella C. Sherrard, 96, of Newton, formerly of Cambridge, Ill., died Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at Park Centre in Newton. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21 at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services. Rev. Jim Aniol will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery in Cambridge. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Cambridge United Methodist Church, the Henry County Historical Museum or the Wesley Life Hospice at Park Centre in Newton.

Luella Carr was born Aug. 25, 1921, in Kewanee, the daughter of John Lawrence and Katharine Wigren Carr. Her grandparents were Michael L. and Catherine Moore Carr and Victor A. and Luella Marshel Wigren. After the death of her father in 1929, and her mother in February of 1934, Luella and her brothers, John and Jim, were adopted by their grandfather, Victor Wigren and their step-grandmother, Sue LeClerq Wigren in Galva. Luella graduated from Galva High School in 1939, attended Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio, and graduated from National College of Education in Evanston, Ill., in 1943.

She taught at the Waukegan War Nursery during World War II (one year), kindergarten in Peoria (one year), Rock Island school (one semester), served as high school librarian in Galva (one year), and then taught first grade in Cambridge for 13 years. Her marriage to John C. “Jack” Sherrard took place Dec. 30, 1947, in Galva. They farmed in rural Cambridge for 61 years until Jack’s death Jan. 6, 2009.

Her memberships included the Cambridge United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 10 years, the Chapter BR of the P.E.O. Sisterhood in Galva, the Henry County Farm Bureau and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. She was a charter member of Valley View Country Club, Cambridge, and the Prairie Queen Quilt Club. Luella was also a member of the Social Hour Club of Cambridge, serving as treasurer, and the Henry County Historical Museum, where she served as receptionist, librarian and board member.

Those surviving are sons, John Sherrard of St. Petersburg, Fla., Martin (Ellen) Sherrard of Ft. Myers, Fla., David Sherrard of Kewanee, and a daughter, Jane (Dan) Johnson of Newton; granddaughters, Stacy Sherrard, Suzanne (Jon) Kral, Kelly Sherrard, Rebecca (Justin) Humke, Jennifer Johnson (fiance Michael Bell); and a grandson, Nathan (Tricia) Sherrard. Other survivors include a great-grandson, Daniel Sherrard; great-granddaughters, Sydney Sherrard and Savannah Humke; and several nieces, nephews, and their extended families. Her parents and grandparents; her husband; a brother, John, in WWII; a brother, Jim; and a nephew, Scott Carr, preceded her in death.
