Thirteen area players land on all-SICL softball teams

The Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully softball teams had identical records. Both teams finished 19-14 overall and 12-4 in the South Iowa Cedar League.

The SICL record was good enough for a tie for third, and both programs were well-represented on the all-conference squads.

Three Hawks landed on the first team, one on the second and two more were honorable mention selections. Colfax-Mingo also had a pair of honorable mention picks, but the Tigerhawks had two first-teamers and three second-teamers.

Earning first-team honors for L-S were senior McKinley Conover, junior Shiloh Cunningham and freshman Korinne Jansen. Sophomore Mallory Loftus was a second-team selection with junior Carson Fisk and freshman Denali Conover both earning honorable mention selections.

Colfax-Mingo senior Ries Wilson returned to the first and she was joined by junior teammate Colbee Cunningham. The second-team selections were senior Rhiannon Haley and juniors Braedynn Rawlins and Chelsea Russell and the honorable mention picks included junior Delaney Underwood and eighth-grader Kylie Doty.

Wilson earned her first-team honor as an outfielder. Overall, Wilson batted .427 and had an on-base percentage of .460. She finished with 30 runs, 16 RBIs, three homers, eight doubles, 10 walks and 17 steals. She committed only two errors in 33 games and had a fielding percentage of .957.

Wilson’s numbers inside the conference were even better. She batted .439 with an OBP of .475. She scored 18 runs, drove in nine, homered once, hit five doubles, walked four times and stole eight bases. She did not commit an error in SICL games.

Colbee Cunningham had a breakout year for C-M in the circle, and was rewarded with a first-team selection as a pitcher. Overall, she was 16-8 with an earned run average of 2.09, 172 strikeouts and 70 walks in 150 2/3 innings. Opponents batted .185 against her in 23 starts.

In conference play, Cunningham was 12-4 with a 1.62 ERA. She finished with 132 strikeouts and 43 walks in 99 2/3 innings. In 15 starts, opponents batted .164 against her.

Jansen made the first team as a catcher for the Hawks. She batted .373, had an OBP of .404 and finished with 24 runs, 29 RBIs, four homers, four triples, six doubles, six walks and 14 steals. She committed 10 errors, threw out eight potential base stealers and had a fielding percentage of .934.

In conference play, Jansen batted .426, had an OBP of .449 and finished with 14 runs, 16 RBIs, one homer, two triples, four doubles, two walks and six steals. She had three errors, threw out four base stealers and had a fielding percentage of .960.

Shiloh Cunningham was a first-team infielder. She had three errors this season and none in conference play. Her overall fielding percentage was .988.

Offensively, Shiloh Cunningham batted .349 overall with an OBP of .405. She finished with 25 runs, 18 RBIs, a home run, three triples, five doubles, six walks and 17 steals.

In conference play, Shiloh Cunningham improved her batting average and OBP to .392 and .446, respectively. She had 14 runs, 11 RBIs, one triple, two doubles, two walks and nine steals.

The final first-team player was McKinley Conover, who was selected as an outfielder. Overall, she batted .286 with an OBP of .352. She finished with eight runs, 22 RBIs, 11 doubles, eight walks and five steals. She had three errors and a fielding percentage of .912.

In conference play, Conover improved her average and OBP to .348 and .388, respectively. She had three runs, 12 RBIs, seven doubles, three walks and five steals. She only committed one error in SICL play.

Loftus was a second-team infielder despite leading the Hawks in batting at .422 and leading the conference with 47 steals. She also had an OBP of .447, scored 44 runs, had five RBIs, hit eight doubles and walked six times. She had 10 errors and a fielding percentage of .908.

In conference play, Loftus batted .389, had an OBP of .429 and finished with 21 runs, two RBIs, four doubles, four walks and an SICL-high 28 steals. She committed eight errors.

One of the second-team catchers was C-M’s Russell. She batted .305 overall with an OBP of .351 and finished with 22 runs, 21 RBIs, four doubles and eight walks. She had four errors and threw out six base stealers.

In conference play, Russell improved her batting average by a full point at .407. She had an OBP of .439 and finished with 11 runs, 16 RBIs, four doubles and three walks. She had two errors and threw out three base stealers.

Joining Loftus on the second-team infield was Haley. She batted .396, had an OBP of .467 and finished team-highs in runs (39), doubles (14) and homers (4) and had 26 RBIs and 13 walks. She committed seven errors and had a fielding percentage of .911.

In conference play, Haley only committed one error. She improved her batting average and OBP to .429 and .500, respectively. She homered once, hit 10 doubles, scored 19 runs, had 13 RBIs and walked seven times.

The final second-team selection for C-M was Rawlins, who was picked as an outfielder. Rawlins batted .316 and had an OBP of .371 with 13 runs, 21 RBIs, three homers, six doubles and six walks. She had four errors overall but only one in conference play.

In SICL games, Rawlins batted .370 and had an OBP of .412. She had eight runs, 11 RBIs, two doubles and two walks.

Doty batted .359 in her first season as a high school softball player for the Tigerhawks. She improved that to .404 in conference play. Her honorable mention selection also included 29 runs, 18 RBIs, 12 walks and one home run with an OBP of .433.

In conference play, Doty had an OBP of .446, scored 17 runs, finished with 12 RBIs, walked four times and homered once. Defensively, she had seven errors overall but only two in conference play.

The Tigerhawks’ final all-conference pick was Underwood. Overall, she batted .282, had an OBP of .329 and finished with 13 runs, nine RBIs and four walks. In conference play, Underwood batted .242 with an OBP of .306 and finished with seven runs, two RBIs and two walks. She committed two errors this season but only one in conference play.

The Hawks’ two honorable mention all-conference selections were Fisk and Denali Conover.

Conover batted .191 overall with nine RBIs. In conference play, she hit .190 with four RBIs. She also was the team’s No. 1 pitcher. Overall, she was 13-13 with an ERA of 3.00 and 71 strikeouts in 31 starts and 151 2/3 innings.

In conference play, Conover was 9-4 with an ERA of 2.36. She struck out 40 and walked 20 in 14 starts and 74 innings. She committed eight errors but only three came in conference play.

Fisk batted .242 with an OBP of .303 and she finished with 20 runs, three RBIs, two doubles, two triples, seven walks and 11 steals. In conference play, Fisk hit .178, had an OBP of .213 and finished with eight runs, one RBI, one triple, two walks and seven steals. She had 11 errors on the season and five of those came in conference play.
