Historical society recevies grant from Prairie Meadows

The Jasper County Historical Society has received a Community Betterment Grant from Prairie Meadows for nearly $2,300. The funds will go toward the Floods of 1993 Augmented Reality Sandbox project.

The Jasper County Historical Museum features a special Flood of 1993 exhibit, which opened in May. The exhibit commemorates the 25th anniversary of one of central Iowa’s most devastating natural disasters.

Museum executive director, Joe Otto collected many items for an exhibit, including a box full of flood-related items from Skip Richards, member of the historical society. Richards was a postal worker at the time of the floods. His box contained photos from his commute, comedic T-shirts related to the floods, Des Moines Register newspapers from the time and a VHS tape that shows KCCI’s coverage of the flood. The exhibit also acts as a preservation of local personal accounts submitted to the museum.

The Jasper County Historical Museum is open daily 1 to 4 p.m., through Sept. 30.
