Four Mustangs named to all-HOIC soccer teams

The Prairie City-Monroe boys’ soccer team has made strides toward respectability the past few seasons. In the middle of the surge was a strong senior class that will be missed.

Three of those seniors were named to the Heart of Iowa Conference teams.

On the girls’ side, the Mustangs’ top player is just getting started.

Senior Misha Seebeck was named a first-team all-conference selection after finishing in a tie for fourth in total goals this past season. Senior Chase Sanders earned second-team honors as a defender, and senior Drew Johnson was an honorable mention choice.

Freshman Emma George was PCM’s top selection on the girls’ side, and she was a second-team pick.

The PCM boys won five matches this past season but lost more than a handful of one-goal decisions and went into overtime or double overtime in several matches, too.

The Mustangs have turned the program into a better direction and Seebeck, Sanders and Johnson were a big reason why.

Seebeck, a senior at Colfax-Mingo, scored 13 goals and had four assists this season. He scored 26 total points and his 13 goals tied for fourth in the conference.

Sanders, who plays on the defensive end of the field, scored three goals and was credited with one assist for a total of seven points.

Johnson was primarily a forward for the Mustangs’ offense. He scored four goals and had two assists for a total of 10 points. He ranked third on the team in both goals and points.

Seebeck was joined on the first team by a quartet of players from Gilbert and a trio of players from Nevada and North Polk.

The conference’s leader and the state’s third-leading goal scorer, Leo Marques of Greene County, highlighted the first team. He scored 36 goals this past season.

The PCM girls did not have a first-team selection, but George earned second-team honors after leading the Mustangs with six goals this season. Her 12 points also led the Mustangs, who finished 3-8 this past season.

Four players from Gilbert, Nevada and North Polk earned the first-team selections.

The top 12 goal scorers in the conference came from those three schools. George finished in a tie for 13th with her six goals.
