Four more things to know from Monday’s PCM school board meeting

1) The PCM Community School District Board of Education approved contracts for bread and milk services in school lunchrooms at its regular monthly meeting Monday night at PCM Middle School in Prairie City. The board approved a bid from Bimbo Bakeries of $8,696 for the 2018-19 school year. Bimbo is PCM’s current supplier of bread.

The board also locked in Des Moines-based Anderson Erickson Dairy to a three-year contract providing milk products to PCM schools. The board voted unanimously to approve the $60,838 contract based on the recommendations of food service director Keri Rolling. The board received two other bids from Dean Foods and Hiland Dairy. AE was PCM’s milk supplier for the 2017-18 school year.

2) The board renewed and amended its property insurance policy with Shomo-Madsen-Umble Insurance. Company partner Melanie Umble addressed the board Monday and recommended changes to PCM’s deductible based on a $2 million property value increase on district facilities and grounds.

The board voted to change its policy to allow for a higher deductible, up to $1,000 from $250, and in exchange, premiums will drop to $173,255 per year from $177,303 and will add full replacement cost for school buses.

Umble said PCM’s total property value at the time of the quote was $39.72 million, and a number figured without factoring in the new renovation improvements.

3) The board approved a measure making district nurses and guidance counselors level I child abuse investigators. Members voted 6-0 to give the investigator I responsibilities to Prairie City nurse Linda Birkenholtz, Monroe nurse Sally Elrod, high school guidance counselor Brittni Horstman, elementary guidance counselor Lindsey Houk and middle school guidance counselor Elizabeth McClellan.

They will now be responsible for reporting any sign of child abuse with a student to PCM administrators, local law enforcement and the department of human services.

4) The board approved a property easement agreement with Roorda Farms, Inc., to have access to .29 acres of land adjacent to PCM High School in Monroe. According to the contract, the district will be responsible for maintaining or repairing any damage done to the property.
