Car on bike incident brings attempted murder charge

A Newton woman has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly striking two bicyclists Friday night in the 500 block of East 14th Street North.

According to the Newton Police Department, 23-year-old Rosela Procenko was arrested and charged Sunday night and transported to the Jasper County Jail.

Police were called to the scene at 8:40 p.m. Friday for a report of two pedestrians struck by a vehicle. The two victims told officers they were double riding a bike when the driver, Procenko, intentionally struck them and drove away. A report detailing the incident states witnesses in the area confirmed what appeared to be an intentional hit and run.

Both victims were transported to Skiff Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

During an initial appearance in Jasper County District Court Monday, Procenko’s bond was set at $150,000. Her next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. June 25.

Attempted murder is a class B felony. If convicted, Procenko could face up to 25 years in prison.
