Lynnville-Sully teams claim home wins over English Valleys

SULLY — It’s good to be home.

Lynnville-Sully’s softball and baseball teams played in front of their home crowds Wednesday and swept the South Iowa Cedar League contests against English Valleys.

The Hawk softball team broke out of a 4-4 tie with the Bear girls in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Hawks plated five runs then held the Bears scoreless in the seventh to win 9-4.

Lynnville-Sully’s baseball squad notched a run-ruled 14-4 win over English Valleys. The Bears had scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to close the gap to 6-4, but the Hawks responded by scoring eight runs in their half of the fourth.

Denali Conover (9-8) was the winning pitcher for the Hawk softball team. She and Mallory Loftus, who had one inning of work, combined to limit the Bears to four hits. They each issued one walk and struck out one batter.

Shiloh Cunningham connected four times in four trips to the plate for four base hits. She drove in two of the Hawks’ runs. Also with two RBIs was McKinley Conover with a single and a double.

Korinne Jansen hit two singles. Carson Fisk, Caitlin Alberts and Loftus each had a single.

Loftus kept her stolen base record for the season perfect, swiping six of the team’s stolen bases in the game. Loftus is 31-of-31 this season. Kaleah Ehresman had two stolen bases.

The win keeps the Hawk girls in the thick of the SICL title hunt at 8-2. Lynnville-Sully (12-9) plays at Class 1A fifth-ranked Sigourney (12-3, 8-1) on Friday. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Sigourney.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys won their second straight SICL game to improve to 2-7 in conference play. They are 3-8 overall. They play at 6 p.m. on Friday at Sigourney (7-4, 7-3).

On Wednesday at home against English Valleys, the Hawks scored five runs in the first inning and one in the second to lead 6-0. Then came all the run scoring in the fourth innings — four by the Bears and eight by the Hawks.
