Marie was born March 26, 1931, in Prairie City, the daughter of William and Maida Bell Charles Elrod. She was raised on a farm south of Prairie City, and attended a county grade school. She was a graduate of Prairie City High School in 1949, and then went on to attend Drake University.
On Feb. 20, 1951, she was united in marriage to Virgil DeBoef at the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church in Prairie City. They lived in New Sharon, were stationed in San Diego, Calif., during Virgil’s military service, and later settled on the family farm in Prairie City.
Marie stayed home to raise her children and work on the family farm. Faith was important to Marie and her strong Christian ethic was evident in the way she lived her life. She was a dedicated Sunday school teacher and volunteered for many different Christian ministries during her lifetime. Swedish Weaving was her passion and her children and grandchildren were the recipients of many blankets that were made with love for her family. Virgil and Marie retired to Grinnell from Albert Lee, Minn., in 2001.
Marie is survived by four children, Wayne (Vicki) DeBoef of Tulsa, Okla., Lee (Jeff) DeBoef Smith of Grinnell, Daniel (Debbie) DeBoef of Mitchellville and James (Jill) DeBoef of Rochester, Minn.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings; husband, Virgil in 2004; and two grandsons.
