PCM boys sitting third after first round of boys state golf tourney

MARSHALLTOWN — The Prairie City-Monroe boys’ golf team put itself in prime position for a top-three finish at the Class 2A boys’ state golf tournament on Thursday.

With 18 holes to go, the Mustangs are 11 shots off the leader and only five shots back of Des Moines Christian.

PCM defeated Des Moines Christian by 12 strokes at the district tournament, and the Lions are within reach of the Mustangs with one day to go at the Par 70 American Legion Golf Course.

PCM shot a 313 in third place. Carroll Kuemper Catholic leads the nine-team field with a 302. Des Moines Christian shot a 308.

The Mustangs are eight shots in front of fourth place Estherville Lincoln Central, which shot a 321. The rest of the field includes Dike-New Hartford (322), Central Lee (324), West Branch (329), Roland-Story (331) and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (334).

Individually, PCM was led by senior Noah Lanphier on Day 1.

Lanphier currently sits in fifth place overall after firing a 3-over-par 73. He is two shots back of Jared Tigges of Kuemper Catholic. Three others are tied for second after shooting 72s.

PCM senior Dayton Boell carded a 77 and is tied for 12th. Senior Jackson Thomas is tied for 19th after firing a 79. Senior Elijah Sperfslage had the final counting score today with an 84.

Juniors Reed Worth and Andrew Van Ryswyk had non-counting scores of 85 and 88, respectively.

The final 18 holes at American Legion Golf Course begins at 8 a.m. Friday in Marshalltown.
