Newton girls’ soccer team wins 5th straight to end regular season

INDIANOLA — Newton High’s Cardinal girls have built a full head of steam up to head into the soccer postseason.

The Class 2A 15th-ranked Cardinals concluded the regular season Tuesday on the road with a 6-1 win over Indianola’s Indians. The victory gave Newton a 3-4 record in the Little Hawkeye Conference, which has five teams — one in Class 1A and four in Class 2A — ranked.

Newton recorded its 10th win of the season and has won five straight games for a 10-6 overall mark. The Cardinals have outscored its opponents 12-1 in those five games.

“The girls played very well tonight controlling the game for the majority of the 80 minutes,” Newton head coach Abby Lamont said. “Indianola scored in the first four minutes of the game. We then marked their top scorer with Abbie Barr and Anna Forsyth. This helped build our momentum and control of the pace of the game.”

Newton pushed to the lead on three first-half goals. Leading 3-1 at halftime, the Cardinals added three more goals in the second 40 minutes of play.

Senior Anna Forsyth had her second straight hat trick for the Cardinals and she was credited with a goal assist. Sophomore Kameron Nehring tallied two goals and senior Carter Lee scored the other goal for Newton.

“Kameron had some great shots as did, Anna, Carter and Peyton Maher,” Lamont said. “Rachel Rhoads and Jordan Banfield did a very good job of helping play wide and keeping the ball on the outside to help advance the ball for our offensive attack.”

Newton senior goalkeeper Addy Blom had six saves in goal for the Cardinals. Newton had 13 shots on goal and two corner kicks.

“Our defense helped shut down a very quick and skilled Indianola attack,” Lamont said.

Newton opens Class 2A Region 4 tournament play at 6 p.m. on Thursday at home against Chariton at H.A. Lynn Stadium. The other opening-round game in Region 4 has Des Moines Hoover at Carlisle on Thursday.

The winner of the Newton and Chariton game plays at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a semifinal game against Winterset at Earlham. The winner of the Carlisle and Des Moines Hoover game plays on Tuesday at No. 4 Norwalk.

The Region 4 championship game is at 6 p.m. June 4 at Norwalk.
