Jasper County Relay for Life is June 7

New location for 2018 event

The community is invited to attend the annual Relay for Life at 6 p.m. June 7 at the Maytag Park, near the Maytag Bowl. The theme this year is Colors of Cancer, where attendees will be celebrating survivors and honoring those that have passed. The Newton DMACC welding class has made a tree that will be filled with different colored ribbons which represent the many colors and kinds of cancer that those in our community have gone through.

Organizers are excited to partner with Newton Fest this year, with the relay happening June 7 in conjunction with the Bill Riley Talent Show. All survivors are invited to participate. They are encouraged to register between 5 to 6 p.m. at the blue tent, near the parking lot at the top of the hill to the west of the bowl. Hy-Vee will be providing the supper again this year.

All money raised from the supper will be supporting the American Cancer Society. Both the Bill Riley Talent Show and the supper will start at 6 p.m. after the National Anthem. The Survivor Ceremony and Walk will be during the intermission of the talent show, where survivor names will be called and balloons will be released and they can take their lap with their caretakers, family and friends.

Throughout the evening community members can enjoy the awesome talent, food and various team fundraising. Immediately following the talent show we will be the Luminary Ceremony, so be sure to stay for that. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the entire evening.

The relay doesn’t just end on Thursday evening. Various teams will be participating in the Newton Fest weekend activities raising funds with their teams to help fight cancer. Be sure to check them out and support their fundraising efforts. There will also be a station with health and other information from American Cancer Society.

There is still time to get involved. If you are interested or have any questions contact Debby Pence at 641-521-9301.
