PCM boys book a spot in 2A state golf tournament

PANORA — The Prairie City-Monroe boys’ golf team got over the proverbial district tournament hump on Friday.

The Mustangs have played in the district meet in each of the past three seasons. The streak of falling short ended though when PCM claimed the district championship and clinched a spot in the Class 2A boys’ state golf tournament.

PCM shot a 326 to win. The Mustangs were 12 shots better than runner-up Des Moines Christian, which also advanced to state.

The Mustangs were led by senior Dayton Boell, who finished third overall with a 77. PCM also got a pair of 81s from juniors Andrew Van Ryswyk and Reed Worth and the final counting score came from senior Jackson Thomas.

Thomas carded an 87. Seniors Elijah Sperfslage and Noah Lanphier shot non-counting scores of 93 and 95, respectively.

Medalist honors went to Panorama’s Kelby Shackelford, who shot a 70 on his home course. Earlham’s Ben Clement also advanced to state individually as he was the runner-up with a 73.

Des Moines Christian’s Drew Shisley finished one shot back of Boell in fourth with a 78.

The rest of the 2A state tournament field includes Carroll Kuemper Catholic, Roland-Story, West Branch, Central Lee, Estherville Lincoln Central, Dike-New Hartford and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.

The 2A state tournament starts with an 18-hole first round at 10:30 a.m. Thursday from American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown. The tournament’s second round will begin at 8 a.m. Friday.
