Cardinals notch Senior Night shutout

Four-for-four is what Newton High’s girls were last week on the soccer pitch.

The Cardinals ended their week’s run with an 8-0 Senior Night victory over non-conference Boone on Friday at H.A. Lynn Stadium. With those four straight wins, the Cardinals climbed back into the Class 2A rankings at No. 15.

The current rankings came out on Friday after Newton had pulled out a 1-0 double overtime win over Class 1A 14th-ranked Pella Christian in Little Hawkeye Conference play on Thursday at Pella.

“Friday night was a great opportunity for us to honor and recognize a great group of young ladies who have given so much of themselves to this program,” Newton head coach Abby Lamont said. Newton has eight seniors on the squad with seven as starters.

Senior Anna Forsyth scored back-to-back goals in a two-minute span, with the first goal coming at the 32:56 mark of the first half. Sophomore Kameron Nehring made it 3-0 just 36 second later, 30:20.

The Cardinals went up 4-0 on a goal from senior Carter Lee. There was 24:19 left in the first half when Nehring scored again to make it 5-0, which is where it stood at halftime.

Forsyth finished her hat trick six minutes into the second half as Newton led the Boone Toreadors, 6-0. She had appeared to have had a third goal with nine minutes left in the first half but it was waved off for goalie interference by Newton.

Lee got her second goal of the game, using a little body language — she bumped the ball into the net with her upper body — with 20:26 left in the game.

Nehring also recorded a hat trick — her second of the season — with a third goal at the 3:56 mark.

“We really focused on our seniors tonight and their dedication to our program. They were able to not only play their positions but some other positions they weren’t used to,” Lamont said. “Everyone had a great night celebrating these girls and they will be greatly missed next year.”

Senior goalkeeper Addy Blom wasn’t challenged much at all by the Toreadors and had one save. The Cardinals controlled the throughout the game, keeping play mostly on the Boone half of the field.

Nehring was credited with two goal assists. Senior Lane Dethrow and freshman Nykole Hernandez each had an assist.

Newton had 31 shots on goal and 10 corner kicks. Lamont pulled the seniors off the field for the final time at home with six minutes left in the game.

Other seniors on the team are Jordan Banfield, Tessa Keeton, Marcelina Marvelli and Tory Church.

Newton (9-6) concludes the regular season and LHC action on Tuesday. The Cardinals play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Indianola.

Newton opens Class 2A Region 4 tournament play at 6 p.m. Thursday hosting Chariton at H.A. Lynn Stadium.
