Nearly 4,700 pounds of food collected this year from generous patrons of Newton by the Newton letter carriers during Newton Post Office Food Drive 2018.
The Newton Post Office collects food each year in May generally averaging about 3,000 pounds.
The food was presented to Captain Janel Cleaveland and Ed Poe of the Newton Salvation Army. The donations refilled the local Salvation Army food bank helping to feed more than 300 families each month in Newton. Cleaveland and Poe were sincerely appreciative of Newton residents and the hard work donated by the city letter carriers.
Don Harger, Newton Post Office maintenance custodial engineer, played a huge role in the event by organizing, calculating and arranging the collected food for donation. The food drive is an annual event promoted across the nation.
The Newton employees were excited to participate and humble as they helped Newton residents. They are already looking forward to next year and hope to beat this year’s record of collected food.
