PCM girls advance to final round of regionals

PLEASANTVILLE — PCM and Colfax-Mingo split their two previous meetings before facing off against each other for a final time on May 14 during the first round of the Class 2A Region 4 tournament at Pleasantville Golf and Country Club.

The rubber match went to the Mustangs. This time around, PCM defeated Colfax-Mingo by five strokes to advance to the final round of regionals. The Mustangs shot a 409.

“This was a really close one,” PCM coach Tony Ford said. “I felt Colfax-Mingo was peaking at the right time, and they really put the heat on us. Our team responded well, fought hard and did enough to finish second.”

No one could keep up with Van Meter, which advanced to the regional final after winning with a 349. The Bulldogs put three in the top eight.

PCM had two in the top eight of its 2A regional opener as seniors Sabrina Reed and Madeline Mitchell both would have advanced if the Mustangs failed to do so as a team. Reed finished fifth overall with an 86, and Mitchell was sixth with a 97.

The final round of the 2A Region 4 tournament is May 21 at Oskaloosa Public Golf Course in Oskaloosa.

The top two teams and the top eight individuals advanced to the final round of regionals.

Colfax-Mingo shot a 414 in third place. Albia advanced two golfers to the final round and was fourth with a 417, Davis County finished fifth with a 461 and host Pleasantville carded a 464 in sixth.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and Interstate 35 did not have enough golfers for a team score and did not advance anyone to the next round.

Van Meter’s Kylie Carey won medalist honors with a 76. Molly Carey finished third with an 83.

The Mustangs were able to edge Colfax-Mingo because they had a better second score with Mitchell’s 97. Their other two counting scores came from juniors Mack Bussan and Allison Wood, who shot a 110 and 116, respectively.

“Mack Bussan has found her swing and is really confident with her game,” Ford said. “Our fourth spot is always up for grabs, and we are lucky to have a number of ladies that can fill that scoring slot on any given meet.”

PCM’s two non-counting scores came from sophomores Brooke Dross and Gabbi Van Baale. Dross shot a 118 and Van Baale carded a 132.

Mustangs finish second at Colfax-Mingo tournament

COLFAX — The girls’ golf programs at Colfax-Mingo and PCM got a good look at some what they can expect at the Class 2A regional golf tournament opener in Pleasantville.

And what the Tigerhawks and Mustangs learned, is the battle for a top-two spot in the team standings could come down to the two Jasper County schools.

PCM defeated Colfax-Mingo by six shots in Newton earlier this season.

The Tigerhawks evened the score with the Mustangs on their home course on May 11 as Colfax-Mingo won its home tournament on a rainy evening.

The Tigerhawks shot a 205 at the top and bested PCM by seven strokes. Albia finished third with a 225.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and Colo-NESCO/Collins-Maxwell did not have enough golfers for a team score.

Albia and EBF also play with PCM and Colfax-Mingo at the 2A regional tournament opener in Pleasantville.

Junior Delaney Underwood cruised to another meet medalist honor with a 42.

Underwood was five shots better than Mitchell and EBF senior Gracie DeLaCruz, who both shot a 47.

DeLaCruz was the runner-up medalist because of a cardback. Mitchell took third and Colfax-Mingo sophomore Brielle Reed finished fourth with a 50.

Mitchell and Reed continued to finish at the top of the PCM’s lineup. Mitchell’s 47 was better than her season-average of 48.60. Reed had an off night with a 54. Her nine-hole average is 48.20.

Bussan also shot a 54 for the Mustangs, which is six shots better than her season average. The final counting score came from sophomore Alexis Dross, who carded a 57.

Brooke Dross and Wood turned in non-counting scores of 59 and 63, respectively.
