C-M boys end season at sectional tourney

PLEASANTVILLE — For the third straight season, the PCM boys’ golf team is Class 2A sectional champions.

But for the Mustangs, that isn’t enough. PCM wants more.

The Mustangs advanced to a third straight district tournament with the hopes of a state tournament berth coming next. PCM won the May 10 2A sectional tournament at the par 70 Pleasantville Country Club by 15 shots over second-place Albia.

PCM won the meet with a 321. Albia also advanced to districts with a 336. Host Pleasantville was third with a 365, Colfax-Mingo finished fourth with a 384, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont shot a 403 in fifth and Davis County carded a 411 in sixth.

Pella Christian and Interstate 35 did not have enough golfers for a team score.

PCM and Albia were 1-2 at the sectional tournament for the third straight season. PCM defeated the Blue Demons by 13 shots in 2016 and edged Albia by four last year.

The Mustangs’ six varsity golfers were in the top eight. They also had five in the top six and had four scores of 81 or better for the second straight season.

Senior Jackson Thomas led the Mustangs at sectionals for the second straight season. He was the runner-up this time around with a 9-over-par 79. Albia’s Trent Garver was the meet medalist with a 75.

Colfax-Mingo was led by junior Ahren Teed, who finished 13th with a 93.

Sophomore Brady Berkey carded a 95 and was 16th overall. Junior Skyler Aikin and freshman Jason Rhinehart both shot 98 as the final two counting scores.

Seniors Jarod Nichols and Jake Dunsbergen were the two non-counting scorers with a 114 and 115, respectively.
