PLEASANTVILLE — Since being disappointed with a 52 she shot on her home course earlier this season, Colfax-Mingo junior Delaney Underwood has been locked in on the links.

The 52 is well in Underwood’s rear view mirror as she took a nine-hole average of 43.38 into the postseason. With all events now being 18 holes, Underwood still isn’t slowing down.

One week after winning the South Iowa Cedar League championship with an 85, Underwood improved her 18-hole average with a runner-up finish at a Class 2A Region 4A first round tournament on May 14.

Underwood advanced to the final round of regionals with a personal-best 81 at the par 70 Pleasantville Golf and Country Club. She advances to the next round along with Prairie City-Monroe’s entire team.

The Mustangs and Tigerhawks split two battles against each other before the latest meeting, but PCM took the rubber match. This time, PCM was five shots better, claiming runner-up honors with a 409.

“Unfortunately, our 414 kept us in third place, but it was still a phenomenal season for the girls,” Colfax-Mingo coach Nick Noring said. “It’s a huge nudge in the right direction. When I took over the program we only had three girls on the team. Now we have 11 golfers who are competitively battling to advance in postseason play.”

No one could keep up with Van Meter, which advanced to the regional final after winning with a 349. The Bulldogs put three in the top eight.

PCM had two in the top eight of its 2A regional opener as seniors Sabrina Reed and Madeline Mitchell both would have advanced if the Mustangs failed to do so as a team. Reed finished fifth overall with an 86, and Mitchell was sixth with a 97.

The final round of the 2A Region 4 tournament is Monday at Oskaloosa Public Golf Course in Oskaloosa.

The top two teams and the top eight individuals advanced to the final round of regionals.

Colfax-Mingo shot a 414 in third place. Albia advanced two golfers to the final round and was fourth with a 417, Davis County finished fifth with a 461 and host Pleasantville carded a 464 in sixth.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and Interstate 35 did not have enough golfers for a team score and did not advance anyone to the next round.

Van Meter’s Kylie Carey won medalist honors with a 76. Molly Carey finished third with an 83.

Underwood shot a 37 on the front nine before finishing with a 44 on the back. Sophomore Sydni Hostetter was the Tigerhawks’ next best shooter with a 109. The final score to advance to the regional final was a 101.

The other two counting scores for Colfax-Mingo were junior Chelsea Russell’s 110 and senior Jessica Zahn’s 114. Sophomore Brielle Reed and junior Camilla Schlosser had non-counting scores of 119 and 120, respectively.

Tigerhawks win home tournament

COLFAX — The girls’ golf programs at Colfax-Mingo and Prairie City-Monroe got a good look at some what they can expect at the Class 2A regional golf tournament opener in Pleasantville.

And what the Tigerhawks and Mustangs learned, is the battle for a top-two spot in the team standings could come down to the two Jasper County schools.

PCM defeated Colfax-Mingo by six shots in Newton last week.

The Tigerhawks evened the score with the Mustangs on their home course on May 11 as Colfax-Mingo won its home tournament on a rainy evening.

The Tigerhawks shot a 205 at the top and bested PCM by seven strokes. Albia finished third with a 225.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and Colo-NESCO/Collins-Maxwell did not have enough golfers for a team score.

Underwood cruised to another meet medalist honor with a 42.

Underwood was five shots better than Mitchell and EBF senior Gracie DeLaCruz, who both shot a 47.

DeLaCruz was the runner-up medalist because of a cardback. Mitchell took third and Colfax-Mingo sophomore Brielle Reed finished fourth with a 50.

Underwood, who has the 10th best nine-hole average in 2A, played better than her season-average of 43.57 as the winner.

Brielle Reed also played well above her season average of 59.17. Her 50 in fourth was a career-best nine-hole score by four shots.

The final two counting scores for Colfax-Mingo came from Russell and Hostetter, who turned in 56 and 57, respectively.

Zahn and Schlosser recorded non-counting scores of 62 and 72, respectively.
