Tigerhawk golfers cruise past English Valleys

COLFAX — One day after shooting her all-time best nine-hole score on her home course, Colfax-Mingo junior Delaney Underwood went even lower.

Underwood overcame an early triple bogey, finished her nine-hole round with four straight pars and shot a 4-over-par 40 to lead the Tigerhawk girls to a 211-232 win over English Valleys during a South Iowa Cedar League matchup at Colfax Country Club.

Junior Ahren Teed led the boys with an 8-over-par 44, and the Tigerhawks completed the sweep with a 198-216 victory over the Bears.

“What a phenomenal team game by both the boys and girls tonight,” Colfax-Mingo coach Nick Noring said. “Shooting one of our best rounds of the year was great, especially against one of the top teams in the conference.”

Underwood began her round with a birdie on the par 4 No. 1 hole. A triple bogey on the second hole halted her momentum, but she recovered with five pars in her final seven holes.

“Delaney dialed in for her personal-best score and was truly in the zone tonight,” Noring said.

“Everyone on the girls from top to bottom brought their ‘A’ game, and I am truly proud of them.”

The Tigerhawk girls won the meet despite not having No. 2 golfer Chelsea Russell or No. 4 golfer Camilla Schlosser. Russell was ill and Schlosser was receiving her state degree at the FFA State Convention.

Sophomore Brielle Reed moved into the No. 2 spot on the team and shot a 54. Sophomore Sydni Hostetter carded a 58 and sophomore Shanen Shedenhelm moved up from the junior varsity to grab the final counting score with a 59.

Freshman Kira Warrick also moved up from the JV to shoot a non-counting 60. Senior Jessica Zahn had the other non-counting score of 63.

Underwood’s 40 won the medalist honors. She was 10 shots better than English Valleys’ Lexie Miller, who finished as the runner-up medalist with a 50.

Teed was the medalist in the boys’ matchup with his 44. He started and ended his round with a par and had five pars on the day. The only trouble he had came on No. 3 and No. 4 where he was 5-over-par on those two holes.

“Ahren had a great comeback meet and delivered one of his best scores of the year,” Noring said. “The boys are really dialing in on their golf game, and this couldn’t be more of a perfect time coming down the stretch of the season.”

Junior Skyler Aikin and senior Jake Dunsbergen were the next best Tigerhawk golfers after Teed. Both Aikin and Dunsbergen turned in a 50. Sophomore Brady Berkey claimed the final counting score with a 54.

Junior Nic Duffy (56) and senior Wyatt Smith (60) had non-counting scores.

C-M also had six junior varsity golfers. Two of those players would have had counting scores on the varsity team.

Senior Jarod Nichols and freshman Jason Rhinehart both finished with 52s, while freshman Brode Nichol carded a 60.

“From top to bottom, the boys are improving tremendously,” Noring said. “This is the direction our program needs to be going.”

English Valleys’ Cole Stephenson was the runner-up medalist with a 46.

Colfax-Mingo plays Iowa Valley at 4:15 p.m. Thursday in Marengo.
