Cardinal boys mark improvement during Oskaloosa Invitational

OSKALOOSA — Newton High’s boys competed in Tuesday’s 18-hole Oskaloosa Invitational golf tournament. They finished 10th in the 15-team field at Edmundson Golf Course.

“We played our best round of the year today. The weather has been nice to allow us to get out and practice. We still need to work some kinks out, but we are showing signs of improvement,” Newton head coach Pat Riley said.

The Cardinals combined for a four-man total of 373, which was 58 shots off the winning team score. Norwalk captured the Oskaloosa Invitational team title with a 315 and Pella was second with a 320.

Grinnell’s Lucas Scherf fired a 68 as the meet medalist. Oskaloosa’s Spencer Tucker had a 74 for second. There were two 75s, a 76 and four 77s in the top 10 individual scores.

Newton was led by Shaiden Simmons, who had rounds of 44 and 46 for a 90 to finish 37th. Nate Keith (48-46) and Damon Reynolds (51-43) carded 94s for 44th and 45th place, respectively. Nate Van Zee shot a 95 (50-45) for 47th.

Also playing for Newton were Evan Walker, 102 (50-52), and Michael Hodnett, 129 (70-59). There were 87 golfers in the competition.
