Cardinals shut out Panthers in non-conference action

Ty Arguello used his head in Monday night’s non-conference home soccer game with the Knoxville Panthers. The Newton High junior’s header was the opening goal for the Cardinals in a 5-0 victory.

“It was a good win over a Knoxville team which has played well this season,” Newton head coach Zach Jensen said. Knoxville came into the game at 6-1 while Newton had a 4-3 record.

Arguello’s goal came at the 34:36 mark of the first half off a pass off the feet of senior Austin Johansen. Four minutes later, senior Dalton Pauley found the net for Newton off a corner kick from senior Gavin Aalbers.

“The guys came out and really played well to get us up by two goals in the first 15 minutes of the game,” Jensen said. “I thought we kind of backed off our play in the second part of the first half. Knoxville was pushing us pretty good late in the half.”

Jensen said he talked to the Cardinals at halftime about reasserting themselves and playing with some fire in the second half. He said he was pleased with his team’s response.

Taking a cross from junior Jacob Murphy, Newton senior Matthew Yeager scored with 29:25 left in the game to put the Cardinals up 3-0. Murphy scored off a crossing pass from junior Nathan Jennings with 24:31 on the clock.

Jennings racked up his second assist of the night with a pass to Yeager for his second goal of the game. Newton was up 5-0 at the 22:04 mark of the second half.

Senior Benny Cheng and sophomore Gage Linahon combined for the goal keeping duties and a shutout. Cheng, who started and logged the most minutes, was credited with four saves. Linahon had one save.
