NORWALK — Newton High’s Cardinal boys played spoilers Thursday in Little Hawkeye Conference tennis action.
The Cardinals netted their first dual win of the season in defeating host Norwalk 7-4 on the Warriors’ Senior Night. Newton is 1-2 in LHC action and 1-3 overall.
Newton won five of the six singles matches and noticed two doubles matches to take the dual.
Junior Collin Hemann won at No. 2 singles, beating Norwalk’s Jonah Smith 6-1, 6-1. Newton senior Grant Hamand outlasted Dan Geistler 6-2, 7-6 at No. 3 singles.
In the No. 4 singles match, Newton senior Devon Van Brogen posted a 7-6, 6-2 win over Ryan Fraser. Senior Rhandyn Oldfield won in similar fashion — 7-5, 6-2 — against Norwalk’s Trevor Castle at No. 5 singles.
Newton senior Chad Nolin won 6-2, 6-1 against Andrew Kawane at No. 6 singles.
The singles loss for Newton was in the No. 1 slot in a close match decided in a third-set tiebreaker. Junior Brady Eberline lost to Norwalk’s Andrew Clark-Wilt, 7-5, 4-6, 10-8.
Newton’s senior duo of Carson Cazett and Cole Cazett notched a 6-2, 6-2 win over Norwalk’s Alex Fredregill and Kawane at No. 4 doubles. Freshman Trent Hamand and senior Dylan Main combined for Newton’s No. 5 doubles win, 6-1, 6-1 over Taelor Jones and Gabe Hickey.
At No. 1 doubles, Norwalk’s AJ Clark-Wilt and Andrew Clark-Wilt beat Newton’s Eberline and Hemann, 6-1, 6-1. Newton’s Hamand and Oldfield lost 6-2, 6-1 to Norwalk’s Drew Wall and Jacob Joss at No 2 doubles.
Nolin and Van Brogen dropped a tough third-set tiebreaker match at No. 3 doubles. The Newton pair lost 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 to Geistler and Smith.
Newton’s Senior Night is Monday when the Cardinals host Des Moines North in their final home dual of the season. The non-conference meet begins at 4:15 p.m. at Aurora Heights Park.
