Newton’s Ulrey places second at trap shoot

MARSHALLTOWN — Newton Trap Team competed in a trap shoot hosted by South Hardin Trap Team at Marshalltown on Monday.

Other club teams competing were Central Iowa Straight Shooters, Hampton-Dumont, AGWSR and Roland-Story. The meet just had a Senior Division, which was high school level shooters.

“The wind and cold was a challenge but overall we did well,” Newton Trap Team head coach Paul Klein said.

The Newton squad of Dallas Schaeffer, Brooke Gifford, Daniel Townsend, Brodee Vest and Ryan Brown posted the Cardinals’ highest score to place fifth. The five Newton shooters combined to hit 204 of 250 clay pigeon targets.

Allison Ulrey shot Newton’s highest score for female competitors. Ulrey broke 46 out of 50 targets to claim a second-place trophy.

Vest and Tucker Wade each shot a score of 45, finishing in a six-way tie for fourth place among male shooters.

“I continue to be impressed with the scores our team is posting,” Klein said. “Other teams are posting really impressive scores as well this season, but I am optimistic that we will be able to keep improving and maybe even take home some awards.”

Newton is set to compete in a sporting clays and skeet shoot Saturday at Pella’s Black Oak Clays shooting range.
