A Wednesday morning crash on Interstate 80 reduced traffic to one lane and caused a traffic backup for some distance westbound on the interstate near Newton.

Two vehicles, a truck pulling a flatbed trailer with a skid loader in tow and a semi-truck hauling several large spools of wire, are involved including a semi-trailer that is overturned and partially hanging over a bridge near exit 164 on I-80 according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. The incident was called in at 7:42 a.m.

“A brief shower of freezing rain created the roadway condition to become icy. A pickup truck pulling a small flatbed trailer lost control and tangled up with the semi which rolled the semi onto its side and over the railroad bridge,” Chief Deputy Duane Rozendaal said.

The spools, which weigh about 11,000 pounds each, were hanging over the bridge as a result of the accident. The right lane of I-80 westbound is currently closed with traffic slowed for quite a distance.

No injuries were reported due to the incident and clean up is currently underway.
