Newton girls’ tennis team loses to Pella

PELLA — Newton High’s girls fell 10-1 to host Pella in Little Hawkeye Conference tennis on Tuesday.

The Cardinals’ lone win came in the No. 4 doubles match. Katie Suttek and Ashley Loehr win a third-set tiebreaker to claim the victory.

The Newton duo won the first set then Pella’s Hanna Blom and Andie Sunderman rallied to forge a tie. Suttek and Loehr netted the match 6-2, 2-6, 10-7.

Pella swept the six singles matches and won the other four doubles matches. The Lady Dutch improved to 2-0 in LHC dual play and 5-0 overall while Newton is 1-1 in conference action and 1-2 overall.

In the No. 1 singles match, Newton’s Bethany Baumgartner lost 6-0, 6-0 to Brooke Jorgensen. Pella’s Cecily Johnson rang up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Newton’s Kinzee Loree at No. 2 singles.

Newton’s Natalie Camp dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Bronwyn Metcalf at No. 3 singles. Harlie Durr lost 6-1, 6-0 to Pella’s Roozeboom at No. 4 singles.

The closest singles match came at No. 5 with Pella’s Madison Poe outlasting Newton’s Emily Valtman 6-4, 7-5. At No. 6 singles, Pella’s Patience Dykstra beat Newton’s Alexis Hoffman 6-1, 6-1.

Jorgensen and Roozeboom beat Newton’s Baumgartner and Camp 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles match went to Johnson and Metcalf over Newton’s Loree and Durr, 6-0-6-0.

Three of the doubles matches went to a third-set tiebreaker — one match won by Newton and the other two by Pella.

Pella’s Poe and Dykstra beat Valtman and Hoffman 7-6 (6-3), 4-6, 10-5 at No. 3 doubles. In the No. 5 doubles match, Pella’s Abbie Nunnikhoven and Bridget Bortscheller defeated Newton’s Kallista Rogers and Rylie Bakalar 6-2, 5-7, 10-2.

Newton hosts Norwalk at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday at Aurora Heights Park in Little Hawkeye Conference play.
