Lynnville-Sully girls win four races, take third as team

MONTEZUMA — Lynnville-Sully’s girls scored points in 17 of the 19 events, winning four races on their way to placing third at Tuesday’s Montezuma Lew Lundy Relays.

Host Montezuma claimed the team title with 156 points followed by Baxter with 133 points. Lynnville-Sully tallied 125 points for third in an eight-team track meet — four of which were South Iowa Cedar League conference teams.

“It was good to get back to competing tonight. It just seems with the weather that meets are so spread out, it’s hard to get momentum and be in the routine of competition,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Darin Arkema said. “Tonight we got to see some of our conference schools and other small schools after two meets of some larger, non-conference opponents.”

Abby Gruver and Mariah Vos went 1-2 in the 400-meter hurdles. Gruver edged her teammate out at 1 minute, 12.09 seconds to 1:12.77. The two combined with Camyrn Russell and Mallory Loftus to win the shuttle hurdle relay race in 1:11.79.

The foursome of Kaleah Ehresman, Carson Fisk, Korinne Jansen and Jataya Meyer posted a gold-medal time of 53.61 seconds in the 4x100 relay race. Winning the 4x200 in 1:57.56 was the relay team of Ehresman, Fisk, Russell and Jansen.

In the 800 sprint medley relay race, the Hawk foursome of Ehresman, Russell, Loftus and Fisk was second in 2:01.43. Loftus placed second in the 100 hurdles in 17.28 with Gruver in third at 17.93.

Meyer was second in the 200 meters in 28.71 seconds. Caitlin Alberts ran second in the 400 in 1:06.03 and Cally Gibbs was sixth in 1:12.83.

The 4x400 relay team of Megan Van Zante, Gibbs, Ashton Thompson and Alberts finished scone in 4:40.39. Haley Breeden, Emily Van Gorp, Meleisha Vos and Van Zante placed third in 11:21.09.

Mary Kate Shaver was third in the 3,000 in 11:48.34. Breeden took fifth in the 800 in 2:53.64 and Caitlyn Bartholomew was sixth in the 1,500 in 6:10.92.

Riley Terlouw ran fourth in the 100 meters in 14.38 seconds and Dylann Huyser was fifth in 14.50. Lynnville-Sully’s 1,600 distance medley relay team of Jaden Brand, Kaylee Maasdam, Thompson and Shaleah Van Wyk placed sixth in 5:29.92.

Jansen threw a fourth-place distance of 28 feet, 4 inches in the shot put. Meyer had a fourth-place leap of 14-6 1/2 in the long jump.

In a non-scoring 4x100 weight person relay, the foursome of Megan Lu, Madison Johnson, Brand and Janelle Rozendaal took first in 1:02.46.

“We continue to explore various line-up possibilities in hopes of finding the best places to put people to be successful,” Arkema said.

“We’ll see Baxter and Montezuma more in the weeks to come so we’ll try to overcome the deficits to them tonight. Continuing to improve has to be our driving motivator right now in practices and when we have meets.”

Lynnville-Sully competes at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at a meet hosted by BGM in Brooklyn.
