C-M golfers sweep Lynnville-Sully

COLFAX — A warm spring day gave the Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully golf teams a chance to get in some South Iowa Cedar League competition at Colfax Country Club on April 12.

The two teams squared off in a head-to-head battle, and the Tigerhawks swept the night.

The C-M boys defeated Lynnville-Sully 204-252. The L-S girls did not have enough golfers for a team score. Colfax-Mingo’s girls won with a 221.

“This wasn’t our best meet for being on our home course,” Colfax-Mingo coach Nick Noring said. “Overall, we are staying consistent with most of our scores.”

Each program was able to celebrate a medalist.

The boys’ winner was Colfax-Mingo junior Ahren Teed as he won medalist honors by four strokes over senior teammate Jake Dunsbergen. Teed shot a 45, while Dunsbergen carded a career-best 49.

“Ahren has really bought into being the No. 1 guy on this team,” Noring said. “He’s staying consistent with his style of game and really setting the tone for the of the team.

“It was great to see Jake Dunsbergen step up and finish as the runner-up today. He’s been challenging himself all year, and this was a great breakout performance for him.”

Lynnville-Sully senior Holden Jansen was third with a 54, and Colfax-Mingo sophomore Brady Berkey and junior Skyler Aikin both shot a 55.

There was a three-way tie at the top in the girls’ race. Winning medalist honors by way of a cardback was Lynnville-Sully junior Tessa Van Maanen. Van Maanen and Colfax-Mingo juniors Delaney Underwood and Chelsea Russell all turned in a 52.

“Delaney had an off night and was still in contention for medalist honors,” Noring said. “She needs to get more mentally tough on these off nights and not let one hole carry over to the next. She is a competitor, and I am very confident tonight was a learning moment and she will prevail.

“Chelsea has been working really hard on her craft. Seeing her finish third in a cardback was phenomenal. I can’t wait to watch her compete and improve with her confidence from here on out.”

Lynnville-Sully was not at full strength because of a conflicting music concert. Only four boys and two girls competed.

The Tigerhawks’ two non-counting scores came from junior Nic Duffy and senior Wyatt Smith, who shot a 57 and 65, respectively.

Sophomore Sydni Hostetter shot a 58 and junior Camilla Schlosser carded a 59 for the Tigerhawk girls’ other two counting scores.

The non-counting scores came from sophomore Brielle Reed and senior Jessica Zahn, who shot a 61 and 65, respectively.

Tigerhawk boys finish second in non-conference triangular

DES MOINES — The C-M boys had three of the top four golfers during a triangular at Woodland Hills Golf Course on April 10.

Unfortunately, not even that was enough to claim a win over host Saydel.

Teed finished as the runner-up medalist with a 46, and Aikin and Berkey each shot a 47. Aikin was third overall after defeating Berkey by a card back.

The Tigerhawks were second as a team with a 196. Saydel won with a 189, and Woodward-Granger placed third with a 201.

Saydel’s Colton Myers was the medalist with a 41.

The final counting score for Colfax-Mingo came from Dunsbergen, who shot a 56. Smith carded a 62, and Duffy turned in a 67 as non-counting scores.
