It appeared on the schedule as a dual between Newton High’s Cardinals and Boone’s Toreadors. When Thursday came around, the Cardinals and Toreadors were joined by Nevada’s Cubs and West Hancock’s Eagles.
On the best day of the spring season for golf at Westwood Golf Course, the high school golfers played a nine-hole quadrangular. Nevada won with a team total of 160 and Boone was second at 173.
Newton combined for a four-man total of 189 for its final home meet of the season. West Hancock came in with a 243.
“I thought we played a little better tonight. We are still not where I would like to see us, but it is a step in the right direction,” Newton head coach Pat Riley said. “It had been nice to get outside for three days in a row and swing the clubs. I look forward to warmer weather and lower scores ahead.”
Individual honors for the meet came down to a scorecard playoff with three golfers shooting a 39 for the round on the Westwood back nine Par 35. Nevada sophomore Harold Dobernecker was the meet medalist with teammate Caden Jones in second and Boone’s senior Ben Wagner in third.
Newton’s varsity was led by sophomore Damon Reynolds with a 43. He had a birdie on the Par 5 No. 16. Senior Shaiden Simmons carded a 45 and senior Nate Van Zee had a 47. Sophomore Nate Keith finished with a 54.
Other varsity scores for the Cardinals were a 57 for senior Evan Walker and a 59 for junior Devon Young.
There were two full junior varsity squads playing in Thursday’s meet. Boone had a 199 and Newton ended with a 264.
Senior Michael Hodnett fired a 60 to lead the Newton junior varsity. Freshman Connor Gosselink had a 66 followed by sophomore Brock Jordan and freshman John Breckenridge each with a 69.
Sophomore Parker Sherwood shot a 70 and Wade Klingensmith had a 72.
Newton’s junior varsity is slated to compete at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a meet hosted by Prairie City-Monroe at Gateway Golf Course in Monroe.
Newton’s varsity is back in action in the Oskaloosa Invitational on April 24.
