Newton Police Department
• Sherri S. Smith, 49, of Newton, was charged with fifth-degree theft and trespassing after authorities were called at 1:45 p.m. Thursday to Hy-Vee. Smith had left the store but officers located her across the street. She admitted to going to Hy-Vee and taking a cake and candles. Smith had previously shoplifted at Hy-Vee in April 2017. At that time she had also been served with a trespass notice. She was cited and released to appear.
• Russell A. Warren, 49, of Newton, was charged with public intoxication after authorities found him at 6:16 p.m. Saturday at 500 E. 17th St. S. Officers were called about a man laying down on a hill and found Warren sleeping. In order to wake him up, officers had to shake Warren and after he got up, he had slurred speech, was confused and had watery, red eyes. He admitted to consuming alcohol and some medication. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
