Cardinals deliver 4 top 10 finishes at ISU

AMES — Claiming a top-10 performance in four of the six events they competed in, Newton High’s Cardinal boys had a strong run at Tuesday’s 25th Iowa State Boys High School Classic.

The high school boys’ indoor track meet was hosted by Iowa State University in Ames.

Senior Matthew Karsten set the tone for the Cardinals. He ran the 60-meter dash in a season’s-best 7.274 seconds, placing him seventh.

Ames junior Bernard Bell won the race in 7.05 seconds. There was a group of three, including Karsten, who placed 6-7-8 in 7.271, 7.274 and 7.276 seconds.

Newton sophomore Logan Cummins ran the 60 dash in 7.842 seconds. Cummins tied for 85th in a field of 141 runners.

Karsten combined with freshman Jeremiah Johnson and seniors Matthew Yeager and Jack Callaghan to place ninth in the 1,600 distance medley relay. The foursome ran a season’s best of 3 minutes, 46.04 seconds. The same four went 3:51.46 at Thursday’s Little Hawkeye Conference meet.

In the long jump, sophomore Camden Winther placed 34th with a leap of 17-5 1/4. Freshman Gavin Urias was 40th at 14-1 1/2 in a field of 76 competitors.

Junior Adam Hunter improved his time in the 1,600 on Tuesday. He finished the race in 5:06.90, which was 15 seconds faster than his time at the conference meet on Thursday, for 56th place in a field of 118 runners.

To close out the meet for the Cardinals, the foursome of Johnson, Winther, Callaghan and Yeager posted a season’s-best time of 3:38.82 — faster by two seconds — in the 4x400 relay race. Newton placed third behind winner Davenport West, 3:37.67, and runner-up North Cedar, 3:38.35. There were 44 teams competing in the event.
