Jerry M. Sanford, 30, of Indianola, was charged with controlled substance violation, failure to affix drug stamp, driving while barred and possession of drug paraphernalia at 6:41 a.m. Feb. 28 after police saw him driving in the 500 block of First Avenue West. He was driving with a expired registration and the driver had a warrant out of Indianola. Police found three bags of a white crystal substance consistent with methamphetamine. The substance weighed 11 grams. Police also found a glass pipe with residue in the center console of the vehicle. Sanford was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Jesse L. Waterland, 36, of Newton, was charged with interference with official acts at 9:38 a.m. Feb. 28 after an officer saw him driving in the 1900 block of South Eighth Avenue East. The officer knew Waterland’s license to be suspended for non-payment of a fine. When police attempted to stop him, he accelerated quickly in the parking lot in an attempt to flee. He stopped the vehicle in the parking lot and fled on foot, where he was arrested shortly after. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Jeffrey D. Dodd, 47, of Newton, was charged with assault bodily injury or mental illness at 10:26 a.m. Feb. 28 after police were called for assault at a residence on East Seventh Street North. Dodd is accused of pushing the victim down three steps and causing a large bruise on the victim’s back. He also is accused of taking the victim’s phone and throwing it across the room. He was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
