Slides, golf carts poised for park board approval

Two capital improvement projects for Newton’s city parks look to be on the home stretch for approval. Community services manager Brian Laube told the Newton Park Board Wednesday the rehabilitation of the water slides at Maytag Pool and the purchase of 12 new golf carts for Westwood Golf Course are currently a part of the city’s upcoming budget.

“This is all possible or pending on the upcoming approval of the city budget and some bonding,” Laube said. “Some of the bigger things look promising.”

The slides, which would start the rehabilitation process following the upcoming swimming season, are estimated to cost $88,000. While retaining the same layout, the slides will have a different look due to new color selections.

Along with the slides, 12 new golf carts for Westwood Golf Course are on the docket to be purchased, replacing 12 leased golf carts currently in use. The new carts total $51,000, but public works director Jody Rhone said it is much more economical to own the carts rather than lease them.

Additional parks items in the budget include a trailer, two mowers, debris blower and a new pickup. Within the department’s own budget, Laube said they plan to continue addressing Americans with Disabilities Act sidewalks at Agnes Patterson Park.

“It is kind of tied to the new restroom out there,” Laube said.

Board chair Melanie Humphrey asked if those improvements will be completed before the public begins use of the ball fields for the season. Laube was unsure of the timeline for construction but said it would most likely take place while the fields are in use.

“We can’t do it in the winter time. When they play ball, it just corresponds to construction season,” Laube said.

Laube also gave an update on the preparation for Fourth of July activities. Currently, the fireworks fund has $7,800 banked with a goal of $10,000 in sight for the celebration. Entertainment has also been booked with Faculty Lounge performing in the evening and bounce houses reserved.
