Conquering Cancer on the Court raises funds

Jill Stanton, coordinator of 2018 Newton Conquering Cancer on the Court night, and others presented a check for $8,620 on Feb. 13 to the Blank Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorder Center and to Child Life at Blank Children’s Hospital. The event was held on Feb. 2 as Newton High’s basketball teams hosted Pella. Stanton said the Newton and Pella communities helped the Newton Cardinal basketball program raise the funds. On that night the following people that have been affected by cancer were honored: Leroy Rinehart, Bailey Cupples, Kaden Kelso, Cash Dickerson and the family of Alex Thomas. The Newton Children’s Choir, BETCHAW and friends and the Newton Pacesetters performed a tribute to those with cancer at halftime of the boys’ game. Money was raised by means of a inaugural NHS 3-on-3 tournament, a bake sale on Jan. 26, shooting hoops for a pop halftime fundraiser, T-shirt sales, a change drive by the middle school students, a high school pep assembly, and by many donations collected on Feb 2. Organizers and Blank Children’s Hospital would like thank all the parents, teachers, coaches and players that helped with this fundraiser.
