Former Maytag Headquarters named ‘Legacy Plaza’

New name and commercial realty partner announced for the former Maytag Headquarters

The former Newton Maytag Campus, now part of the Des Moines Area Community College’s Newton Campus, has been renamed “Legacy Plaza” to rededicate and market the campus to prospective businesses from across the country.

“In renaming the former Maytag headquarters to Legacy Plaza, DMACC was very mindful of the heritage associated with the historic buildings that make up the campus,” said Kim Didier, DMACC’s Executive Director of Business Resources. “At the same time, DMACC continues working with the community to honor this legacy and building a new future for the campus. The historic buildings 1 and 2 will continue to be part of the Historic Maytag Event Complex and referred to by that familiar name.”

Reza Kargarzadeh, President and Founder of Engineered Plastic Components, Inc., donated the $9 million facility, which included eight buildings and 482,000 square feet of office and meeting space to DMACC in October 2016.

“Legacy Plaza is a fitting description of this beautiful former corporate headquarters,” said Joe Pugel, chair of the DMACC Board of Trustees. “Prospective businesses will secure many advantages by locating here, including access to technology and close proximity to I-80 and I-35 and perhaps best of all, the DMACC Newton Campus. The College will supply work-ready students and graduates.”

DMACC President Rob Denson said the college and former Maytag campus, now Legacy Plaza, has always been closely linked. “Maytag helped create the DMACC Newton Campus more than a quarter century ago,” said Denson. “Now, we have a unique opportunity to create new businesses and new jobs for our graduates. This is truly an initiative where everyone wins, new businesses, the greater Newton community and the College.”

Didier added, “DMACC has been pleased with the community’s enthusiasm to rent the event facilities for weddings and other community activities. The rental of these facilities helps support the upkeep of the business campus and its role as an important asset for Newton.”
